Summer brings longer days, outdoor adventures, and cherished family memories. However, with increased outdoor activities and rising temperatures, prioritizing safety is crucial for everyone to enjoy the season. At UGI Energy Services, being prepared and informed is key to a safe and enjoyable summer.

Essential Summer Safety Tips-2

Beat the Heat: Sun and Temperature Safety

The summer sun is delightful but also hazardous. Prolonged UV exposure increases risks of sunburn and heat illness. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+, reapplying every two hours or after swimming or sweating, including often-missed areas like ears and neck.

Heat illnesses are serious. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns to watch for heat exhaustion signs such as heavy sweating and dizziness, and heat stroke symptoms like confusion.

  • Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, even before you feel thirsty.
  • Limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours (10 AM to 4 PM) and seek shade whenever possible.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-protective sunglasses.

Water Safety: Fun Without the Risk

Water activities are a summer staple but require constant supervision, especially for children. The American Red Cross advises designating a responsible “water watcher.”

Ensure children wear properly fitted life jackets when boating or in unfamiliar waters. Even strong swimmers can benefit from flotation devices. Also, take the time to learn water rescue and CPR skills, and check water conditions and ensure pool safety equipment is accessible..

Home and Yard Safety Measures

Backyards should be safe for summer fun. Inspect playground equipment for damage and age/skill appropriateness. For pools, install barriers like fences with self-closing gates, pool covers, and alarms. Store pool chemicals safely and keep rescue equipment nearby.

Properly maintain outdoor cooking equipment—clean grills, check gas connections, keep fire extinguishers accessible, and never leave grills unattended. Establish a safe zone around grills free from children and pets.

Energy-Efficient Cooling and Safety

Maintaining comfort indoors while managing energy use is vital in summer. ENERGY STAR recommends setting air conditioners to 78°F when at home and higher when away, reducing costs and system strain. Use ceiling fans to circulate air and allow for higher thermostat settings. Clean or replace filters monthly to prevent system overload and fire risks. Check cords on portable cooling units and avoid overloading outlets..

Activity-Specific Safety Tips

Cyclists should wear helmets and follow traffic rules, per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Inspect bikes regularly. Hikers should inform others of plans, carry water and first aid kits, and know how to avoid poisonous plants and wildlife. For organized sports, use proper safety gear, ensure activities are age-appropriate, and encourage hydration with frequent breaks.

Insect and Pest Protection

Use EPA-approved repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Wear long sleeves and pants during peak mosquito times (dawn and dusk). Check for ticks after outdoor activities and remove them promptly with tweezers to avoid disease transmission.

Emergency Preparedness

Keep a well-stocked first aid kit with essentials like bandages, antiseptics, and burn gel. Know nearby medical facilities, program important phone numbers into your device, and consider a basic first aid course to handle emergencies with confidence.

Creating Lasting Summer Memories Safely

Safety doesn't limit fun – it ensures lasting memories Setting a good example by following safety habits encourages kids to do the same. Make safety discussions part of your routine and look out for each other.

This summer, let safety be your companion on every adventure. With preparation and awareness, focus on creating wonderful moments with your loved ones while staying protected.
