Find me on:

From backyard gardens to energy-smart habits, here are our favorite ways to make Earth Day meaningful -- and a whole lot of fun.

Earth Day

Happy Earth Day from all of us at UGI Energy Services! Earth Day -- celebrated every April 22nd -- is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on how we can all be better stewards of our planet. And the great news? You don't need to make huge changes to make a big difference!

Whether you have little ones at home or you're looking for ways to engage your whole community, we've rounded up some of our favorite family-friendly activities to celebrate Earth Day -- many of which also happen to be energy-smart. Because here at UGIES, we believe that caring for the environment and managing your energy wisely go hand in hand.

6 Fun Earth Day Activities for the Whole Family

Plant a Garden (or Just a Seed!)

You don't need a big backyard to become a gardener! Even a small windowsill herb garden with basil, mint, or parsley is a great project for kids. Planting together teaches children where food comes from, how plants grow, and the importance of healthy soil. If you have outdoor space, consider planting native flowers or vegetables -- native plants support local pollinators and require less water and energy to maintain. Energy Tip: Homegrown herbs and veggies reduce trips to the grocery store -- fewer car trips means less fuel used!

Host a Neighborhood Cleanup

Grab some gloves, a few trash bags, and your family or neighbors and spend an hour picking up litter at a local park, trail, or along your street. It's a simple, impactful activity that's great for kids of all ages. You can even turn it into a friendly competition -- who can collect the most recyclables? Be sure to sort your finds into trash and recycling when you're done! Fun Fact: Recycling aluminum uses 95% less energy than producing new aluminum from raw materials. Every can counts!

Ditch the Car for the Day

Challenge your family to go car-free on Earth Day! Walk or bike to school, work, or your favorite local spot. If you need to go farther, try public transportation. It's a great way to get some fresh air and exercise while reducing your carbon footprint. Bonus: kids love riding bikes, and it's a perfect excuse to explore your neighborhood in a new way. UGIES Tip: Reducing vehicle trips is one of the most effective ways families can lower their household energy consumption.

Get Creative with Recycled Art

Before tossing out cardboard boxes, paper towel rolls, egg cartons, or old magazines -- save them for an Earth Day art project! Set up a craft station and let kids build robots, create collages, or make bird feeders out of recycled materials. This activity sparks creativity, keeps items out of landfills, and gives children a hands-on lesson in the importance of reusing what we already have. Idea: Make a 'dream planet' poster using old magazines -- what does your family's ideal Earth look like in 20 years?

Read & Learn Together

Earth Day is a great excuse to visit your local library and check out some books about nature, ecosystems, energy, or environmental heroes. There are fantastic titles for every age -- from picture books for toddlers to chapter books for older kids. Learning about the environment together opens the door to meaningful conversations about how your family can make a difference every day of the year. Suggestion: Look for titles about renewable energy, conservation heroes, or how plants and animals are interconnected. The library is free -- and energy-efficient!

Do an Energy Audit of Your Home

Turn your home into a classroom! Walk through each room with your kids and look for ways to save energy together. Check that lights are off in empty rooms, look for drafts near windows and doors, and see if any electronics are plugged in and drawing 'vampire power' even when not in use. Kids often take these lessons to heart -- and you might be surprised how enthusiastic they get about turning off the lights! UGIES Tip: Small habits like unplugging chargers, switching to LED bulbs, and sealing windows can lead to real savings on your energy bill.

Every day is a good day to think about our planet -- but Earth Day is a special reminder that small actions, taken together, can make a truly big difference.

Make Every Day a Little Greener

Earth Day is April 22nd -- but the habits you build today can last all year. Here are a few quick wins your family can adopt starting today:

  • Switch to reusable bags, bottles, and containers to cut down on single-use plastics.
  • Fix leaky faucets -- a dripping tap can waste hundreds of gallons of water per year.
  • Adjust your thermostat a few degrees and use a programmable or smart thermostat to reduce unnecessary energy use.
  • Open blinds on sunny days to let in natural light and warmth instead of using lamps or turning up the heat.
  • Unplug electronics and chargers when not in use -- they draw power even in standby mode.
  • Plant a tree if you can! Trees provide shade, reduce heating and cooling needs, and support local wildlife.
  • Make recycling easy and visible in your home so the whole family remembers to participate.
