Pennsylvania's natural gas industry closed out 2025 with its strongest production growth in years. For the businesses, institutions, and communities that UGI Energy Services proudly serves across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, that’s an encouraging sign of a healthy and reliable energy supply picture heading into 2026 and beyond.

A True Energy Powerhouse — Right in Our Backyard
Pennsylvania remains the country’s second-largest natural gas producer, surpassed only by Texas. In 2025, the state strengthened that position: approximately one in five cubic feet of natural gas produced in the U.S. came from Pennsylvania's wells.
Natural gas is a valuable resource, and UGI Energy Services is uniquely positioned to help customers access it.
With more than 13,500 active wells operating statewide (up over 300 from the year prior) and natural gas activity spanning 34 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties, the supply foundation supporting our customers' energy needs is broad and resilient.
The Numbers Point to Momentum
Pennsylvania produced approximately 7.772 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in 2025 — a 5.1% increase over 2024, translating to roughly 21.3 billion cubic feet flowing into pipelines and markets every single day.
What makes this especially notable is the context: 2024 saw a modest production dip of 1.8%, making 2025's rebound even more impressive. The pace and scale of that turnaround speaks to the extraordinary productivity of the Marcellus and Utica formations and the ongoing commitment to infrastructure investment across the state. For customers working with UGI Energy Services to secure their natural gas supply, that kind of regional resilience is a real advantage.
The Counties Powering the Commonwealth
Production strength is spread across Pennsylvania, with the northeastern and southwestern regions leading the way. Susquehanna County topped all counties with nearly 1.4 trillion cubic feet of output — about 17.7% of the state's total — backed by close to 2,000 producing wells. Bradford and Washington counties each contributed roughly 15% of statewide volume, with Greene, Lycoming, Tioga, Westmoreland, Butler, Wyoming, and Armstrong rounding out the top 10.
Together, these 10 counties account for around 90% of all natural gas produced in Pennsylvania. With production roughly split between the northeast (53%) and southwest (45%), the geographic diversity of output creates a well-balanced supply base — reinforcing reliability for customers across the region.
Sustained, Remarkable Growth
Step back even further and the picture becomes truly remarkable. Since 2013, Pennsylvania has transformed into a world-class shale gas producer.
Early growth years were staggering — 51.9% in 2013, 31.2% in 2014, consistent double digits through the mid-2010s. As the industry has matured, growth rates have naturally moderated, but the upward trajectory has continued.
The 5.1% increase in 2025 may look understated by historical standards, but at today's production volumes it represents an enormous real-world addition to supply — more gas reaching more homes, businesses, power plants, and export facilities than ever before. When production from neighboring Ohio and West Virginia is considered alongside Pennsylvania’s output, the broader region ranks as the world’s third-largest natural gas-producing region.
That's a foundation the entire energy market, including UGI Energy Services and our customers, can build on with confidence.
What This Means for Your Business
A strong and growing production base in Pennsylvania is great news for any business that depends on natural gas. More supply means more market stability, better pricing optionality, and greater resilience against the kind of weather-driven disruptions that have historically tested energy buyers in the Northeast.
At UGI Energy Services, we monitor regional production trends like these closely — because staying ahead of the market is part of how we deliver value to the 42,000+ customer locations we serve. Whether you're interested in locking in a fixed-rate plan, exploring flexible pricing, or simply want a clearer picture of your energy supply landscape, our team is here to help you make the most of a well-supplied market.
