2025 world energy day

Energy is integral to everything we do. From the time we wake up, to even while we’re sleeping, energy is heating/cooling our homes, keeping our food fresh, powering 24/7 health care facilities, fueling the world’s round-the-clock logistics network, and so much more. You wouldn’t even be reading this if not for energy. So, let’s celebrate World Energy Day together by exploring a few energy facts and ways to celebrate.

What is World Energy Day?
World Energy Day, observed on February 14, is a global initiative that explores the importance of energy, promotes energy efficiency, raises awareness of excessive energy consumption, advocates for increased investment in renewable energy sources, and encourages international relations to tackle energy challenges and climate change together.

Energy Facts
Mark this World Energy Day by educating yourself on some lesser-known energy facts. These might even come in handy on your next trivia night!

  • “Renewable natural gas” (RNG) describes biogas (methane) that is produced from organic waste materials. RNG is sourced from landfills, food waste, wastewater treatment plants, and agriculture/livestock operations. There are approximately 433 operational RNG facilities across North America.
  • The United States is the world’s top natural gas producing country, producing over 37 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) in 2023.
  • When cooled to extremely low temperatures (-260°F), natural gas turns into a liquid (aka liquefied natural gas or LNG). Because it takes up less space, natural gas is often turned into LNG before being transported.
  • Did you know that LNG serves as rocket fuel, helping launch rockets like SpaceX’s Starship given its many benefits.
  • Nearly 189 million Americans use natural gas because it is affordable, reliable, safe and essential to improving our environment.
  • Households that use natural gas for heating, cooking and clothes drying save an average of $1,132 per year compared to homes using electricity for those applications.
  • In 2016, the world’s first solar-powered plane (the “Solar Impulse 2”) took flight. The journey – which took 17 months – was approximately 26,718 miles and was 100% powered by the sun. This made it the first aircraft to circle the globe without a drop of liquid fuel!
  • Wind turbines are very large – they can have 200+ foot-long blades and measure more than 300 feet tall. That’s almost as big as a football field!
  • The average wind turbine generates enough power in one month to fuel more than 940S. homes. It takes 46 minutes for a wind turbine to generate enough electricity to power the average U.S. home for one month.
  • The average household can save about $450 on their energy bills each year by using ENERGY STAR appliances. Since 1992, ENERGY STAR has helped save American families and businesses more than $500 billion.
  • Propane weighs about one and a half times more than air.
  • About 90% of global propane production comes from the U.S., which exports over 10 billion gallons annually. This amount can fuel 4 million vehicles or provide energy for 12 million homes.

How to Celebrate World Energy Day
Are you looking to be energy efficient and promote both sustainability and energy reliability? Here are a few ways to celebrate World Energy Day.

  • Thank a utility worker.
  • Reduce energy consumption by unplugging appliances and devices not in use.
  • Replace any incandescent light bulbs with LEDs.
  • Cook using energy-efficient appliances such as natural gas stoves, natural gas grills, slow cookers, air fryers, microwaves, and pressure cookers.
  • Turn the heat down a few degrees (especially when not home or sleeping) and use a blanket or wear an extra layer instead.
  • Share energy facts – like the ones in this article – with friends, family, and coworkers.
  • Make art from recycled materials.
  • Host a fun energy trivia night or simply offer a few energy insights with your family when all together.
  • Bring ideas on how to save energy into your workplace.
  • Conduct an energy audit in your home or business.
