This article provides a self-guided checklist for facility managers to score their building’s energy efficiency.

How to use this checklist

Check every box that applies to your facility. Each item carries a point value based on its energy impact. Add up your points at the end and use the scoring guide to see where you stand — and what to do next. 

Section 1: Lighting & Controls

All or most lighting uses LED bulbs

5 pts

Occupancy or motion sensors control lights in low-traffic areas

5 pts

Daylight harvesting (auto-dimming near windows) is in use

4 pts

Exterior lighting is on timers or photocells

3 pts

Exit signs are LED

2 pts

Section 2: HVAC & Mechanical

HVAC equipment is less than 15 years old

5 pts

Programmable or smart thermostats are installed

HVAC filters are replaced on a regular schedule

Ductwork is inspected and sealed periodically

Variable frequency drives (VFDs) are used on large motors/pumps

Section 3: Building Envelope

Roof insulation meets or exceeds current code

Windows are double-pane or better

We track energy use monthly by reviewing utility bills
